Another semester of teaching sports marketing is coming to a close. As much as I enjoy educating the next generation on this exciting industry, it can be a challenge to get them to understand the grit it often takes to succeed in this field.
DegreesInSports reports that there are currently 515 bachelor’s programs in the U.S. Within a matter of weeks, there will likely be more graduates than available jobs.
This was my advice at the beginning of the semester:
- “Your career starts now. Don’t just rely on a degree; leverage all the work you’ve done to earn that degree.”
- “Take your projects and presentations seriously; you can showcase and demonstrate these outside the classroom (and consider making necessary revisions even after you receive a grade).”
- “Organize your best work in a portfolio – no matter if it’s online and public, or private but accessible.”
If I hadn’t followed my advice years ago, I probably wouldn’t have gotten my start with SportsBusiness Daily. Now I’m hoping it can work for someone else.
